Third Degree (Audible Audio Edition) Greg Iles Regina Reagan ISIS Audio Books Books Reviews
I have read several of Mr. Iles books and have enjoyed them. This book is quite different but it was hard to put down once I got into it. The characters were just that, characters from a back wood Southern town. It was actually like a real life drama with some humor, sadness, fright and lots of other emotions. It was a bit unbelievable at times but like I said I didn't put it down. When the story came to an end, it was sad to think that adults could torment each other to an almost insane degree. I recommend it for reading pleasure but alert you to some very emotional parts due to the wants and needs of two very unhappy people.
i can't believe greg iles wrote this terrible book. i could have saved a lot of money & bought a cheap romance novel. it's so bad i can't finish it. Shame, shame, shame!
I expected to like this book, I really did. The primary woman character is an embarrassment to women the world over, every decision she makes is wrong and I mean that. She uses the term (referring to women in books who go down into the basement of the haunted house and expecting good things to happen) as being TSTL. Meaning Too Stupid To Live. She is herself TSTL. If any mother could not protect her children better than this, I fear for the youth of our world. Wasted my time and money on this one. I won't give up on Greg Iles though, I've read some really good books written by him. Just not this one.
This was an okay book, but not even close to Greg Iles other books that I have read, and I have read almost all of his novels. I could not read the one about the Nazi concentration camps, I think it was called "Black Cross" but not because it wasn't a good book, it definitely was, but that period in German history is too sad, I cannot take the details of the inhuman treatment that the Jews were subjected to, it is too painful.
But it was a good & well written book (I read a little of it but could not finish it) unlike this latest book he has written. It is not a bad story, there is a lot of suspense and some mystery to it, it is just more shallow than any other book of his that I have read. And the ending seems incomplete, it definitely needed to go a little farther with the storyline, I thought. It sort of left me hanging, like an Alfred Hitchcock movie! But you be the judge, it may satisfy most people who read it, but did not sit well with me. I hope he goes back to his old style in his next novel, as I am one of his biggest fans and always look forward to his next book!

I've listened to a number of Greg Iles audiobooks while driving here and there and generally, they have been very entertaining. Something happened with this one. The last third is so boring and unbelievable; I only hung on until the end because I thought surely there would be a good twist in the story. There's not. Take my word for it and move on to another Iles book.
"Third Degree" by Greg Iles is a barnburner and a must read for fans of the mystery/thriller genre. As always in his stories the characters are richly developed, the pacing breathtaking, the storyline extraordinary. This particular story starts slowly with the first three chapters a real drag in my opinion but after that it's Katie Bar the Door action, and plot twists that will blow your mind. Were it not for the slow start I would have given this story 5 stars instead of 4. If infidelity, murder, vengeance and mayhem appeal to you then you will love this story as well...4 stars!!!!
As I read this book, there were pieces that seemed familiar. I may have read it before. Or maybe it was reminiscent of other books I've read. Regardless, it was good, but not great. Almost the entirety of the story takes place inside of a house, but so much happens that you almost forget that. Some of the instances were a bit much to accept (timing and coincidence, again and again), but it was very gripping, particularly in the moments up to the climax. A happy ending was a given, at least for some of the characters. As such, the epilogue was a little sappy and unnecessary.
Quality of the plot and clarity and style of the writing again highlights Greg Iles as an outstanding writer. The appreciation of human emotion and reaction to human frailty of infidelity and traumatic disease are superbly dealt with and woven into the story. Quality comes from running the plot into a full conclusion, no loose ends and a satisfying end. Great writing from one of the proven best.
